Jaharie Martin scored on a 7-yard run following a 34-yard punt return by Molayo Irefin in the fourth quarter and Alhaji Kamara made a game-clinching interception with seven seconds left as Maine held off Colgate 17-14 in a season opener. Maine was clinging to a 10-7 lead when Irefin turned a 54-yard punt into a net gain of 20 yards, giving the Black Bears the ball at the Colgate 21-yard line. Martin needed two carries to cover the final 15 yards with 10:31 remaining. Colgate cut its deficit to three with 4:27 left, using Michael Brescia’s 10-yard run to cap a 67-yard drive. The Raiders drove to the Maine 35 on their final possession, but Kamara picked off Brescia in the final seconds to preserve the victory.

The U.S. military took part in an Iraqi raid in the country’s western region that killed 15 people as forces targeted suspected militants from the Islamic State group. That's according to a statement from the American military early Saturday. The U.S. military’s Central Command alleged the militants were armed with “numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive ‘suicide’ belts” during the attack, which Iraqi forces said happened in the country’s the Anbar Desert. It added: “There is no indication of civilian casualties.” An Iraqi military statement said “airstrikes targeted the hideouts, followed by an airborne operation.”

Houston’s Framber Valdez has not allowed a hit through seven innings Friday night against the Kansas City Royals. He has thrown 98 pitches with seven strikeouts. He has walked three and hit a batter. The 30-year-old Valdez threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 1, 2023. He nearly had a second one earlier this month before Corey Seager homered with two outs in the ninth inning of a 4-2 win over Texas Aug. 6.

Two missiles suspected to have been fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels have targeted a ship in the Gulf of Aden. The missiles splashed down Friday nearby without causing any damage. That's according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, which said the attack happened 240 kilometers east of Aden. The Houthis did not immediately claim the attack. However, it can take the rebels hours or even days afterward for them to acknowledge their assaults. The attack comes after the Houthis repeatedly assaulted and then boarded a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the nearby Red Sea, planting explosives on it they later detonated.

ATLANTA — This is the eighth straight year that Tony Finau has qualified for a spot in the Tour Championship, the longest active streak that he shares with Xander Schauffele.

Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran homered in the 10th inning as the Boston Red Sox rebounded after squandering a four-run lead and beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5. But, Rafaela’s 14th homer off Shelby Miller (6-8) scored Nick Sogard and made it 6-4 with one out in the 10th. Duran, who doubled in his first two at-bats, hit Tyler Holton’s first pitch 431 feet into the right-field stands to make it a three-run game at 7-4. Connor Wong doubled and homered for the Red Sox (70-65), who moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers (68-68) for fourth in the American League wild-card race.

Cody Bellinger homered to cap a seven-run second inning, and the Chicago Cubs held on to defeat the Washington Nationals 7-6 in the opener of a three-game series. Chicago, which has scored 80 runs in its last eight games, improved to 6-1 on its three-city road trip. The Cubs have won 18 of 26 since July 31. Dylan Crews homered for the second consecutive game for Washington, which was denied its first three-game winning streak since July 19-21. While both teams are just about a lock to reach the playoffs, a split of the first two games of a four-game weekend set between the NL East rivals moved the Braves within five games of the disision-leading Phillies with 27 games left in the season.

Tropical Storm Shanshan is slowly making its way northeast toward the Tokyo area, setting off a mudslide that killed three people. The storm is also halting trains and leaving underground passages brimming with water. The storm is packing winds of up to 40 miles per hour as it crawls over the southwestern island of Shikoku and the main Honshu island Saturday at a speed of 6 mph. It's expected to affect parts of Japan through Sunday and into Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. At least six deaths that are believed to be related to the storm have been reported.

Individual plaintiffs’ attorneys say allowing insurers to pursue reimbursem*nt separately will subvert the deal, drain what is available to pay fire victims and lead to prolonged litigation.

Bryson Daily and Kanye Udoh both ran for two touchdowns and Army cruised to a 42-7 victory over FCS-member Lehigh in a season opener. Army marched 80 yards in nine plays the first time it had the ball, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback plunge by Daily for a 7-0 lead. Lehigh answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Luke Yoder raced 18 yards for a touchdown on third-and-2 to tie the game at 7 after one quarter. Daily scored on another 1-yard run to cap a 13-play, 76-yard drive to put the Black Knights up 14-7 early in the second quarter and they pulled away from there.

Baltimore Orioles rookie second baseman Jackson Holliday has returned to Coors Field. It's the ballpark where he learned some of his earliest baseball lessons as a toddler at the feet of his father, former Colorado Rockies star Matt Holliday. Jackson's father, mother and younger brother made the trip from their home in Oklahoma for this weekend's series between the Orioles and the Rockies. The 20-year-old Holliday struggled when he was called up by the Orioles in April but has fared much better in his second stint in the majors, which began on July 31.

A judge has rejected a push for a new trial in a multimillion-dollar political conspiracy case against rapper Pras Michel of the Fugees. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly found his defense attorney’s use of a generative AI program during closing arguments and other errors didn’t amount to a serious miscarriage of justice during the Washington D.C. trial. Prakazrel Michel was found guilty of 10 counts after a jury heard testimony from witnesses ranging from actor Leonardo DiCaprio to former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Michel faces up to 20 years in prison on the top charges.

LAS VEGAS — When the jury in the murder trial of Robert Telles began deliberating, they took an anonymous vote.

Johnny Cueto was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels on Friday after two rough outings. The 38-year-old right-hander gave up nine runs in 11 1/3 innings in his two starts for the Angels, both losses. He allowed six runs in five innings in Tuesday night’s 6-2 loss at Detroit, with three of the six hits being home runs. The Angels are the sixth team for Cueto, who is 144-113 with a 3.52 ERA in 370 major league games. His career began with Cincinnati, followed by stops in Kansas City, San Francisco, the Chicago White Sox and Miami.

Ivan Toney is headed to Saudi Arabia. The striker will join Al-Ahli after the Saudi club agreed to pay Brentford a transfer fee reported to be $52 million. The Saudi Pro League had been quiet this summer — in contrast to big spending a year ago — but lured the England international away amid reported interest from Premier League clubs. The 28-year-old Toney scored 72 goals in 141 appearances for Brentford.

NEW YORK — Donald Trump asked a New York judge to indefinitely delay sentencing in his criminal hush money case to allow a U.S. judge time to fully consider a request to move it to federal court.

Memphis Grizzlies forward GG Jackson II will have surgery after breaking the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The team announced Friday that surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday and an update will be provided following the procedure. The 19-year-old Jackson was a second-round pick of Memphis in the 2023 NBA draft. In 48 games, including 18 starts, he averaged 14.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, earning second team all-rookie honors.
