Phillies slugger Bryce Harper playing through nagging elbow, wrist injuries

  • By DAN GELSTON - AP Sports Writer

Bryce Harper says he’ll be fine for October, that the elbow and wrist injuries the two-time NL MVP has played through this Philadelphia Phillies season are more a nuisance than a concern for the postseason. Harper’s pop has been down this month, about as noticeable as the black support sleeve he wears on his right arm. Harper says he’s battled wrist problems since May while the elbow is a more recent issue. The 31-year-old Harper is in his first full season playing first base after reconstructive elbow surgery forced him to move from right field.

Martin's TD run after Irefin's long punt return helps Maine fend off Colgate 17-14 in season opener

  • AP

Jaharie Martin scored on a 7-yard run following a 34-yard punt return by Molayo Irefin in the fourth quarter and Alhaji Kamara made a game-clinching interception with seven seconds left as Maine held off Colgate 17-14 in a season opener. Maine was clinging to a 10-7 lead when Irefin turned a 54-yard punt into a net gain of 20 yards, giving the Black Bears the ball at the Colgate 21-yard line. Martin needed two carries to cover the final 15 yards with 10:31 remaining. Colgate cut its deficit to three with 4:27 left, using Michael Brescia’s 10-yard run to cap a 67-yard drive. The Raiders drove to the Maine 35 on their final possession, but Kamara picked off Brescia in the final seconds to preserve the victory.

Ship targeted by 2 suspected missiles from Yemen's Houthi rebels in Gulf of Aden as oil tanker burns

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

Two missiles suspected to have been fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels have targeted a ship in the Gulf of Aden. The missiles splashed down Friday nearby without causing any damage. That's according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, which said the attack happened 240 kilometers east of Aden. The Houthis did not immediately claim the attack. However, it can take the rebels hours or even days afterward for them to acknowledge their assaults. The attack comes after the Houthis repeatedly assaulted and then boarded a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the nearby Red Sea, planting explosives on it they later detonated.

Maui judge agrees to ask state Supreme Court about barriers to $4B wildfire settlement

  • By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER - Associated Press

The Hawaii Supreme Court will be asked to weigh in on an issue that threatens to thwart a $4 billion settlement in last year’s devastating Maui wildfires. Judge Peter Cahill agreed Friday to ask the state high court questions about how insurance companies can go about recouping money paid to policyholders. Insurance companies that have paid out more than $2 billion in claims want to bring independent legal action against the defendants blamed for causing the deadly tragedy. Individual plaintiffs’ attorneys say allowing insurers to pursue reimbursem*nt separately will subvert the deal, drain what is available to pay fire victims and lead to prolonged litigation.
