I have no need for it any more, so if anyone out there has a use for it I'm happy to pass it along.

I’m selling a kiln! I bought it a little over a year ago , but unfortunately I never had a hefty enough outlet to plug it in. The person I bought it from said it worked, but since I haven’t been able to plug it in, I can’t confirm. More details (like dimensions) are in the Craigslist posting. $500 or best offer.

You’ll need to come pick it up on Rock Creek Road, though my fiancé and I can help you load it. Feel free to reach out through Craigslist or text. Thanks!

I was wrong about there being a Japanese knotweed spraying campaign. Most of the damage was caused by the late frost. The roads department and some private landowners did spray. After seeing that, I assumed all the damage was from spraying. It was a good lesson for me in that things are not always as they seem. Any water way without thick vegetation on the banks is inviting knotweed to come repair it. If you need to kill knotweed don’t bother spraying the above ground growth. Inject herbicide directly into the root. Lots of info online about how to do this effectively.

Sunchokes, firewood, banjo, etc. (2024)

FAQs

How far apart should I plant sunchokes? ›

Sunchokes spread unless you harvest every tiny piece of tuber in the fall, so container growing is a smart choice. In the ground: Plant two inches deep and one foot apart. In container: Use minimum five gallon pot. Plant four to six inches deep.

How to cook sunchokes to avoid gas? ›

The blog goes on: “Modern science concurs — 'Boiling Jerusalem artichokes in an acid such as lemon juice or vinegar will hydrolyze the inulin to fructose and small amounts of glucose'.” The blogger subsequently boiled “quarter-inch-thick sunchoke slices for 15 minutes in just enough lemon juice to cover them.

Where to plant sunchokes? ›

Plant Jerusalem artichoke in full sun. The Jerusalem artichoke prefers loose, well-drained soil but will grow almost anywhere. Add aged compost or sand to planting beds before planting; loose soil will make tuber harvesting easier.

Do deer eat sunchokes? ›

Whitetail deer will consume the tops of the sunchoke. We use a deer repellent called Deer Off. This works most of the time if applied bi-weekly throughout the growing season. Heavy deer pressure will make this less effective.

Can sunchokes grow in the shade? ›

Jerusalem artichokes can be grown in full sun or partial shade. If they get at least six hours of sun a day, this will help ensure the best yield.

Do sunchokes need a lot of water? ›

Sunchokes are mildly drought resistant. They can grow with little water but if you want a big crop, water at least once a week.

Can you eat too many sunchokes? ›

Sunchokes enjoyed much popularity in Europe after their introduction, until they started developing a reputation for causing excessive amounts of flatulence. This actually has some basis in reality, as sunchokes contain a great deal of inulin, which does cause gas and bloating when eaten in excess.

Are sunchokes healthier than potatoes? ›

Jerusalem artichokes are sweet, nutty, and potato-like, with even more health benefits then their root vegetable cousins. Moser says they're very high in vitamins, potassium, iron, and fiber. “They're really a very healthy vegetable,” she notes. Julie Harrington, R.D., chef and co-founder of Culinary Nutrition Studio.

How to tell if sunchokes are bad? ›

The best way to tell if sunchokes have gone bad is if they develop a foul odor or appearance. Mold will also start appearing as they begin to decay.

Can I grow sunchokes in pots? ›

We chose to grow our sunchokes in containers because they can be hard to eliminate from a bed or plot once they have produced new tubers. Any small or even partial tuber left in the ground will likely sprout again in spring.

What grows well with sunchokes? ›

Despite these unattractive traits, they are listed as companion plants for corn, peanuts, and rhubarb. Additionally, I've seen it listed with some edible flowers and herbs we are interested in growing: borage, chicory, and chamomile, as well as daylily, lemon balm, and Joe-Pye Weed.

Can you leave sunchokes in the ground? ›

If you're somewhere warmer then leave harvest until mid-winter. Jerusalem Artichokes aren't easy to store well but one of their advantages is that they're quite happy left in the ground until you need them.

Are sunchokes good for you? ›

Sunchokes are a great source of iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium; are super high in fiber and low in carbohydrates; and contain inulin. Although inulin has certain healthful benefits, it can cause gassiness or bloating when eaten in excess.

What is a deer's favorite vegetable? ›

Vegetables that deer seem to prefer include beans, lettuce, cabbage, and cole crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

How far apart are Jerusalem artichokes? ›

Plant 2 to 4 inches deep, in rows 30 to 42 inches wide with 15 to 24 inches between plants. To prevent the artichokes from spreading and becoming a potential weed problem, plant the artichoke tubers in contained beds.

How far apart should you plant artichokes? ›

Plant artichokes 4 feet apart in an area with full sun to partial shade and nutrient-rich, loamy soil. Improve nutrition and texture of native soil by working in compost or other rich organic matter.

How to keep sunchokes from spreading? ›

Sunchokes can become invasive after a few years. We've had to surround our main patch with 12 inch metal flashing sunk into the ground. If you have more room, one farmer who was selling sunchokes at the farmer's market in Spring told me she kept their patch in control by mowing around it.
