The new feature is a part of GCash’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international presence and cater to the digital finance needs of overseas Filipinos.The feature is accessible to all GCash app users who have funds in US-based accounts with banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Chase, among thousands of others. To use this feature, users must first link their US bank accounts to their GCash account.Upon cashing in from a US bank account, dollars are automatically converted to Philippine pesos using competitive foreign exchange rates and instantly deposited into the user’s GCash wallet. Each cash-in transaction incurs a fixed $1 fee, offering a more affordable alternative to traditional remittance methods.This seamless integration with US financial institutions simplifies the remittance process, reducing reliance on multi-application, fragmented processes. We see this as a chance to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring the validation of our SIM registration data,” said Delgado.He noted that most scam messages reaching mobile users now are sent via over-the-top media services or chat apps, Rich Communication Services (RCS) chats for Android users, other internet-based messaging platforms, and fake cell towers, rather than through telco networks.Globe reiterated its call for the full implementation of the National ID system to standardize the type of ID accepted for SIM registration, thereby enhancing the process’s credibility. The current law permits the use of various types of government-issued IDs, which may be susceptible to tampering or even forgery.GCash has been selected to pilot the government’s National ID eVerify Platform, which will verify the identities of customers in public and private sector transactions.SIM Data SweepLast year, Globe began a sweep of its SIM registration data following reports of non-human photos being used to register SIMs. Since then, it has been deactivating unverified submissions.Earlier, it also deactivated and removed over 30 million unregistered SIMs from its subscriber base after the registration period (December 27, 2022 to July 30, 2023) for SIMs in use before the SIM Registration Act came into effect.To ensure the security of its SIM registration platform, Globe implements the following measures:Advanced encryption protocols to secure data transmission during registrationLive photo capture technology to prevent the use of stock or pre-existing photosLimited ID submission retries to guard against attempts to register SIMs using fake documentsGlobe continues to proactively block SIMs associated with fraudulent activity. In Q1 2024, it blacklisted 36,549 SIMs from other networks, a 62% increase compared to the 22,455 competitor SIMs blocked during the same period last year. Globe also deactivated 841 SIMs from its network in Q1 2024 after they were identified as potential sources of spam or scam SMS, or misuse.In September 2022, Globe was the first telco in the country to implement the unprecedented measure of blocking all person-to-person SMS with clickable links, a requirement that the National Telecommunications Commission imposed on other telcos a year later.     BSP, PNP, DILG, and GCash Leads to Arrest of Counterfeiting SuspectIn a collaborative effort, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Interior and Local Government, supported by GCash, recently apprehended a man involved in counterfeiting money. The suspect, Jason Bendejo Bañaria, was found selling money bouquets made of counterfeit bank notes. He was caught possessing 300 pieces each of PHP 1,000.00 and PHP 500.00 counterfeit bills.Bañaria now faces charges for violating BSP Circular Number 829, Series of 2014, in relation to Sec. 50 of RA 7653, PD 1602 (Counterfeit bank notes), and Illegal Possession and Use of False Treasury or Bank Notes and Other Instrument of Credit under Art. 168 of the Revised Penal Code.Counterfeiting Philippine currency carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to 20 years and a day. The BSP has proposed extending this jail term to deter counterfeiting. Under existing law (Republic Act No 10951), the maximum fine for this crime is PHP 2 million, a significant increase from the previous P10,000 before the law’s enactment in 2017.     CICC and GCash Alert Public to Beware of Fraudulent Messages#GCash in collaboration with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), cautions users about social media channels falsely claiming affiliation with the app. These channels often post dubious links via counterfeit profiles that interact with followers to obtain personal information used for scams, frequently leading to account takeover or loss of hard-earned funds.Numerous deceptive accounts promote gambling or gaming opportunities under misleading names like “GCash88 Media”, “GCash Update," and others, creating a false impression of association with GCash.“We consistently advise the public to refrain from clicking on links from unknown or suspicious sources,” stated Alexander K. Ramos, Executive Director of CICC. "Scammers previously disseminated such links via SMS, but they have now discovered another platform.”GCash’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, Gilda Maquilan, also reiterated the need for users to exercise increased vigilance during online transactions. “GCash’s official pages are @gcashofficial, where we announce our promotions, and @wearegcash, the official corporate page of GCash, nothing else.” We believe that social media platforms remain the most effective means to engage our users.
