Objects from Hull Maritime Museum’s reserve collection are returning from storage to be housed in a new bespoke centre reconfigured and transformed from office space to house more than 45,000 maritime objects.
Maritime treasures ranging from ships in bottles to bits of ships are being documented and stored to enable better collections care, research, and conservation.
Previously stored within the Maritime Museum, this new storage facility dedicated to Hull Maritime Museum’s reserve collection will enable the museum itself to open a new floor to visitors, uncovering more of the breath-taking Victorian architecture. Not only revealing more of the building it will also enable the museum to showcase 50 per cent more maritime treasures, many on display for the first time.
Robin Diaper, Curator of Maritime and Social History, said: “Having this dedicated space enables us to open the second floor of the museum to the public, an amazing space not previously seen by visitors.
“The Maritime Museum’s collections are designated as being of national significance, and this new facility will enable us to hold them in care for future generations.”
Simpson of York are making good progress on the refurbishment of the Maritime Museum and is expected to be completed by the summer. Once completed, the yearlong task of installing new displays, technology and artefacts will begin.
